چکیده

Over the last 25 years, a life-course perspective on criminal behavior has assumed increasing prominence in the literature. This theoretical development has been accompanied by changes in the statistical models used to analyze criminological data. There are two main statistical modeling techniques currently used to model longitudinal data. These are growth curve models and latent class growth models, also known as group-based trajectory models. Using the well known Cambridge data and the Philadelphia cohort study, this paper compares the two “classical” models – conventional growth curve model and group-based trajectory models. In addition, two growth mixture models are introduced that bridge the gap between conventional growth models and group-based trajectory models. For the Cambridge data, the different mixture models yield quite consistent inferences regarding nature of the underlying trajectories of convictions. For the Philadelphia cohort study, the statistical indicators give stronger guidance on relative model fit. The main goals of this paper are to contribute to the discussion about different modeling techniques for analyzing data from a life-course perspective and to provide a concrete step-by-step illustration of such an analysis and model checking. Further modeling steps such as the inclusion of antecedents and consequences are discussed.

Beyond Multilevel Regression Modeling: Multilevel Analysis in a General Latent Variable Framework

Multilevel modeling is often treated as if it concerns only regression analysis and growth modeling. Multilevel modeling, however, is relevant for nested data not only with regression and growth analysis but with all types of statistical analyses. This chapter has two aims. First, it shows that already in the traditional multilevel analysis areas of regression and growth there are several new m...

Multilevel Growth Mixture Models for Classifying Groups

This article introduces a multilevel growth mixture model (MGMM) for classifying both the individuals and the groups they are nested in. Nine variations of the general model are described that differ in terms of categorical and continuous latent variable specification within and between groups. An application in the context of school effectiveness research is presented. Schools are classified i...

Interpreting and Testing Interactions in Conditional Mixture Models

Mixture modeling applications in psychology often include covariates to explain class membership and aid in construct validation of the latent classification variable. These applications tend to use between-class models involving only main effects of predictors. However, a variety of developmental theories posit interactions among risk and protective variables in predicting membership in trajec...

Using Time-Varying Covariates in Multilevel Growth Models

This article provides an illustration of growth curve modeling within a multilevel framework. Specifically, we demonstrate coding schemes that allow the researcher to model discontinuous longitudinal data using a linear growth model in conjunction with time-varying covariates. Our focus is on developing a level-1 model that accurately reflects the shape of the growth trajectory. We demonstrate ...

Group-based trajectory modeling in clinical research.

Group-based trajectory models are increasingly being applied in clinical research to map the developmental course of symptoms and assess heterogeneity in response to clinical interventions. In this review, we provide a nontechnical overview of group-based trajectory and growth mixture modeling alongside a sampling of how these models have been applied in clinical research. We discuss the challe...
